Class Instructor Bio:

Ken Milburn is a professional photographer and leading expert in digital photography. Ken's photographic career has ranged from starlet publicity photos for Univeral Pictures, to album covers, advertising, and editorial work for the TV Guide and Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine. His work has been featured in Design Graphics Magazine and Computer Graphics World. Ken is the principal author of 20 computer and photography books including Digital Photography: Expert Techniques from O'Reilly Associates, and The Digital Photography Bible from Wiley and Sons, and several books on Photoshop techniques. Ken has has written more than 300 articles on digital media, featured in Publish, DV Magazine, MacWorld, Computer Graphics World, PC World, and InfoWorld.).

Class Projects and Objectives:

This online class is packed with projects and tips.  Students can expect to: 

  • Learn some of the benefits of using Camera Raw over traditional image formats and approaches.
  • Learn how to find and open RAW files in Adobe Bridge.
  • Explore some basic aspects of a RAW image processing: using curves, editing multiple images, and using auto adjustments.
  • Do a photoshoot and explore/experiment with Camera Raw features.
  • Take at least 40 photos of four different subject situations (at least 10 for each subject).
  • Apply Adjust and Curves Adjustments to your four best photos (one for each subject) and submit them.
  • Create and submit a contact sheet for each subject situation.
  • Learn how to set white balance using color cards.
  • Learn how to manipulate white balance using the White Balance Tool.
  • Learn guidelines for using auto adjustments.
  • Learn guidelines for using the Curves tab.
  • Learn how to create a monochromatic image in Camera Raw.
  • Do a portrait photoshoot, taking portraits in three different subject situations (at least 10 for each subject).
  • Include a gray card in the first shot of each series.
  • Use Camera Raw Adjust and Curves tabs to adjust the brightness values in the images.
  • Correct white balance, using Camera Raw Temperature and Tint sliders and the White Balance dropper.
  • Use the Saturation slider in the Adjust tab and the sliders in the Calibrate tab to create a toned monochromatic image.
  • Learn how to install pre-build camera calibrations.
  • Learn how to match test shots to color and gray cards.
  • Learn how to use the Adjust, Lens, and Calibrate Tabs to calibrate your camera.
  • Learn guidelines for situational calibrations and how to save your calibration settings.
  • Set up a product photography shoot with appropriate lighting and minimal background.
  • Calibrate your camera settings for your product shoot, making note of and explaining your choices.
  • Do a product photoshoot, taking at least 20-30 shots.
  • Apply Camera Raw Adjust and Curves tab adjustments to correct the brightness and white balance in your images.
  • Learn how to adjust multiple files concurrently.
  • Learn how to apply Camera Raw settings to multiple files in Adobe Bridge.
  • Learn how to convert Camera Raw files to other formats.
  • Learn how to use cropping and leveling tools in Camera Raw.
  • Develop two treatments for a batch of images and apply those settings in a batch in Camera Raw to the set.
  • Submit a contact sheet for each treatment.
  • Use the Image Processor to output your images to three formats: JPEG, TIFF, and PSD.
  • Explain your choice of Image Processor settings and submit a screenshot of your Image Processor dialog in each case.
  • Learn how and when to apply sharpening in Camera Raw.
  • Learn how and when to eliminate sensor noise in Camera Raw.
  • Learn how and when to eliminate vignettes in Camera Raw.
  • Learn how and when to eliminate color fringing in Camera Raw.
  • Take or find photographs that illustrate the following image problems: not sharp enough, with sensor noise, vignetting, color fringing.
  • Using Camera Raw, show the ability to correct at least two of these image problems.
  • Show before and after photos and comment on your process.
  • Learn how to create high- and low key versions of an image.
  • Learn how to create multiple renditions of a RAW file to expand the dynamic range of an image.
  • Learn how to create HDR images from RAW files.
  • Create high key and low key examples of portrait photos in Camera Raw.
  • Do a photoshoot, creating three different RAW exposures of the same scene.
  • Combine your three images into an HDR image.
Prerequisites:
  • To take this course you will need to own and have basic experience with a digital camera that shoots RAW and have basic experience with Adobe Photoshop or equivalent digital imaging program.
