Flash Experience Design Adobe Flash is a breakthrough program that allows designers to engage Web users through new forms of interaction. In this project-based course, you'll learn how to design Flash environments that convey a story or deliver an effective message.

Using narrative tools, you will explore how to implement event-driven functionality, movie clips, non-linear events, preloading and optimization. The focus will be on constructing experiences that connect to viewers emotionally without sacrificing the principles of usability.

Class Instructor Bio:

David Witt is a Brooklyn, NYC-based new media artist and award-winning interactive multimedia designer. He has worked for many top brands and agencies, and has a background in graphic design, web design, digital imaging and high-end print production. His current focus is on creating new paradigms in interface design and multimedia applications using FlashMX/Actionscript, which he also uses to create abstract animations that are shown at galleries and new media venues around New York City. David holds a MFA in Design + Technology from Parsons School of Design.

Class Projects and Objectives:

This online class is packed with projects and tips. Students can expect to: 

  • Explore experience design by critiquing a Flash-based Web experience.
  • Develop a "sketch" of a concept design and storyboard for a Flash experience.
  • Demonstrate a basic ability to develop an experience design concept from a source graphic.
  • Learn how event-driven functionality works in Flash.
  • Learn approaches to Movie Clips, methods, and targeting.
  • Learns concepts for loading external assets into Flash.
  • Design an animated button following directions.
  • Create a home page interface for a promotional site, focusing primarily on creating interesting button interactions.
  • Learn some important principles for optimization in Flash.
  • Learn some techniques for creating an interactive gallery.
  • Learn about optimizing images in Flash.
  • Learn how to load external images into a Target.
  • Learn debugging techniques.
  • Create an online Flash gallery or customize a gallery developed in the course.
  • Design a dynamic interface that showcases a portfolio, applying the principles of experience design.
Prerequisites:
  • Own and have basic experience with Adobe Flash MX or MX 2004.
